Tips to avoid collisions between cars and pedestrians
When a pedestrian gets hit by a car, he or she can receive some very serious injuries. Some areas, such as university campuses, shopping centers and parking lots, have more pedestrians than other areas, so it can be especially important in these areas to do everything you can to safely share the road.
Many people are both a pedestrian and a driver on any given day, and some tips for avoiding collisions apply regardless of your mode of transportation, such as:
- Avoid alcohol or drug consumption before traveling
- Avoid distractions, like cellphones
- Follow the rules of the road, including obeying all signs and right-of-way laws
- Be aware of your surroundings
What can pedestrians do?
As a pedestrian, it is also important to be predictable with your movements and to be as visible to drivers as you can. This includes walking on sidewalks when they are available, facing traffic when you must walk on the road and crossing at a crosswalk whenever possible.
What can drivers do?
As a driver, it is important to watch vigilantly for pedestrians, especially in areas where there is a high concentration of foot traffic or where lighting is poor. You should also be careful when you are pulling into or out of driveways because pedestrians often are not expecting to encounter vehicles there.
Special care should also be given at crosswalks. Drive slowly when you approach a crosswalk and be prepared to stop for pedestrians. Do not pass a vehicle that is stopped at a crosswalk because the driver may have stopped for a pedestrian who you cannot see from your current position.
Accidents between cars and pedestrians can be catastrophic. However, the actions of both pedestrians and drivers can help prevent many tragic accidents from occurring.
